STANFORD is one win away from the Final Four in Charlotte, N.C., as the Cardinal defeated Illinois-Chicago 6-0 (Nov. 25). STANFORD will now host the SMU Mustangs at New Maloney Field on Saturday, Dec. 2. With a win on Saturday, STANFORD will make its second Final Four trip in history. The Cardinal made it all the way to the title game in 1998 before losing to Indiana 3-1... WASHINGTON was ousted in the second round by Indiana for the second consecutive year, losing 2-1 in Seattle... STANFORD is ranked No. 6/No. 4 and WASHINGTON No. 18/No. 10 in the NSCAA and Soccer America final regular season polls, respectively... UCLA is ranked No. 14 in Soccer America.

PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE YEAR -- RYAN NELSEN, SR, MF, STANFORD
Nelsen, a senior from Christchurch, New Zealand, has helped guide Stanford to a 18-2-1 overall record (6-2 Pac-10) and leads the Cardinal in its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Captain of the 2000 New Zealand Olympic Team, Nelsen ranks fifth on the Stanford squad in points (16) and is sixth in goals (5). He was named to four all-tournament teams this season, garnering Defensive MVP honors at the Dartmouth Classic. His efforts have helped the Cardinal maintain the nation's stingiest defense (0.38 GAA), while leading the NCAA with an .760 shutout percentage. Nelsen, a Stanford tri-captain, has started all 21 games this season.
PAC-10 FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR -- ALEX YI, MF/D, UCLA
Yi, a midfielder/defender from Easton, Md., helped lead UCLA to a 12-7 overall record (3-5 Pac-10) and its 18th straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Yi was one of three Bruins to start all 19 games this season, and played a major role for a UCLA defense that posted a 1.05 goals-against average (2nd in the Pac-10) and recorded six shutouts. A current member of the U.S. Under-20 National Team, he was named one of five Players to Watch by the Missouri Athletic Club earlier this season. Yi has compiled 39 career caps with the Under-17 National Team, scoring two goals, and has three caps with the Under-20 Team.
PAC-10 COACH OF THE YEAR -- BOBBY CLARK, STANFORD
In his fifth season on The Farm, Clark has guided Stanford to its second ever NCAA quarterfinal appearance and a school record-tying 16 regular-season victories. The Cardinal has compiled an 18-2-1 overall record (6-2 Pac-10) this season, and entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 3 seed. Clark has posted a 71-20-12 overall record (.748) on The Farm, while his career mark stands at 153-62-25 over 13-plus seasons. Clark achieved his 150th career victory with a 1-0 overtime victory over Indiana on Nov. 4, 2000. In 2000, Stanford leads the Pac-10 in virtually every statistical category: points (201), goals (67), assists (67), goals allowed (8) and goals against average (0.38 gpg).

A Closer Look at the Game
SMU (19-4-0, No. 6 Seed) at STANFORD (18-2-1, No. 3 Seed)
- The Mustangs won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title (at-large) while the Cardinal finished second in the Pac-10 (at-large).
- SMU defeated IUPUI 2-0 and Kentucky 3-1 to get to the third round while Stanford beat No. 19 CS Fullerton 4-0 and Illinois-Chicago 6-0.
- Record in Quarterfinals: SMU (0-5-3), STAN (1-0-0)
- The Mustangs have not faced a Pac-10 team this year.
- The Pac-10 is 1-2-0 versus the Missouri Valley Conference this season. Stanford has the lone Conference win with a 6-0 victory over Western Kentucky (Sept. 3).
- Stanford is 9-1-0 at home this season, losing only to Washington in overtime, 2-1 (Oct. 6).
- The match will showcase Diego Walsh (MVC Player of the Year) and Ryan Nelsen (Pac-10 Player of the Year).
- Final NSCAA Ranking: SMU- 10, STAN- 6
- Stanford defeated SMU 1-0 back in 1989, the only time the two teams have faced each other.
- The victor will play the winner of the Brown/Connecticut match in Ericsson Stadium (Charlotte, N.C.) on Dec. 8.
