Women's Gymnastics Inks Two

Nov. 28, 2000

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford women's gymnastics team has signed Mandy Delgado and Marla Ranieri to national letters of intent, head coach Mark Cook announced today. Delgado and Ranieri, both set to begin at Stanford University in fall 2001, have experienced success on the national level.

Delgado, the 2000 Junior Olympic Vault Champion, comes to The Farm from nearby Cupertino, Calif (Monte Vista High School). In addition to competing for West Valley Gymnastics, she was a member of the U.S. International Elite squad in 1998 and 1999. As a member of the Junior Olympic National Team, Delgado captured all-around titles at both the 1998 Level 10 Regionals and 1998 Junior Olympic Nationals.

'Mandy is an explosive gymnast,' according to Cook. 'Her vault and floor are extremely dynamic, but she will also contribute on both bars and beam.'

Ranieri, from the North Star Gymnastic Academy in Montville, New Jersey, is a veteran of both national and international competitions. In 1997, she was a member of the fifth-place American team at the Trophee Massila in Marseille, France. After leading her team to a second-place finish at the 1996 Level 10 National Championships, Ranieri competed in the 1997 U.S. Challenge, the 1998 American Classic, U.S. Classic and National Championships, and the 1999 Pan Am Trials. Ranieri was named the 1999 New Jersey 'Athlete of the Year.'

'Marla will be a great all-around competitor for the Cardinal,' says Cook. 'Her strongest event is bars, followed closely by beam and floor.'

Stanford opens its 2001 season at the prestigious Away EC Challenge in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on January 6. The Cardinal opens its home season against defending national champion UCLA at Maples Pavilion on Friday, January 19 at 7:30 p.m.
