Nine Husky Cross Country Runners Earn Pac-10 All-Academic Honors.

SEATTLE--Nine Husky cross country runners were named to the Pac-10 Cross Country All-Academic teams, Commissioner Tom Hansen Wednesday. Two UW women notched first-team honors, while four Husky women earned Honorable Mention accolades. Three Washington men's runners were also awarded Honorable Mention status.
Syrdal, one of the Huskies' top five runners all season, carries a 3.79 grade point average, in her psychology and pre-medicine major. She also garnered first-team all-academic honors for both cross country and track as a junior and was named to the second team for both cross country and track her sophomore campaign. Syrdal is the first Husky woman to run in four consecutive NCAA cross country meets,
Mullen, an arts and sciences pre-major, maintains a 4.00 grade point average. She earned an Honorable Mention for the 1999 cross country season. Mullen was the Huskies' seventh runner at the West Regional championships.
Honorable Mention academic honorees include senior Liza English (Yakima, Wash.), junior Susan Werner (Boise, Idaho) and sophomores Kate Bradshaw (Issaquah, Wash.) and Kate Spigel (Albuquerque, N.M.). English earned Honorable Mention for the 2000 track season and for both the cross country and track seasons in 1998-99. Werner received Honorable Mention accolades for the 2000 track season.
The Husky women capped their season with a 23rd-place finish at the NCAA Championships in Ames, Iowa, despite losing two of their top seven runners to injuries during the season.
Juniors Mike Hill (Bellevue, Wash.) and Dan Schruth (Spokane, Wash.) along with the Huskies top runner in 2000, sophomore John Russell (Mica, Wash.) garnered Honorable Mention for the Washington men. Hill earned second-team accolades for the 2000 track season, while Schruth garnered Honorable Mention for cross country in 1999, and Honorable Mention for track in 2000.
The Husky men finished their season, highlighted with three team victories, with an eighth- place finish at the West Regional meet.
To be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and be either a started or significant contributor to the team.
