TEMPE, Ariz. - Five men and 11 women on the Arizona State cross country team were named to Pac-10 All-Academic teams, conference commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Senior Garrett Jensen, junior All-American Lisa Aguilera, senior Mary Duerbeck and redshirt freshman Beth Martin were all first-team selections.
Jensen, ASU's top male finisher in three races this season, has a 3.86 GPA in the master's program in education. Jensen earned all-region honors with a 21st place finish at the West Regionals.
Aguilera, who turned in arguably the best individual season in school history in 2000, has a 3.71 GPA in civil engineering. Aguilera set a school-record with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, becoming just the third ASU woman to garner All-American honors. She was also named the West Region Athlete of the Year.
Duerbeck, an all-region selection who finished her collegiate cross country career as one of ASU's top-three finishers all season, has a 3.91 GPA in broadcasting. A steady member of ASU's starting seven all year, Martin is the only redshirt freshman named to the all-academic first-team with a 4.0 GPA (undecided major).
Additional Sun Devil men named to the honorable mention team are sophomore Kris Alexander, redshirt freshman Dan Maher, sophomore Jeremy Rasmussen and senior Brandon Strong.
ASU women named to the honorable mention team are redshirt freshman Cynthia Atencio, senior Jennifer Bridgeman, senior Colleen Burke, junior Tiela Cairns, sophomore Candi Criscione, redshirt freshman Jen Hurbis, junior Kristin McFerron and junior Brianna Torres.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be either a starter or significant substitute.
