Nov. 30, 2000
Berkeley - Cal senior Nick Harris was announced today as one of three finalists for the inaugural Ray Guy Award, given to the nation's top punter.
The three players announced by the Greater Augusta (GA) Sports Coucil are Cal's Harris, Kevin Stemke of Wisconsin and Preston Gruening of Minnesota.
The winner will be announced on the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN on December 7, 2000. The finalists will then be invited to Augusta for an award's banquet on December 12. Al Davis, General Partner of the NFL Oakland Raiders, will be the keynote speaker ofthe evening.
Harris, who has been chosen on several All-America teams, finished the 2000 season as the NCAA career record holder for most punts (322) and most punting yardage (13,621). He averaged 41.5 yards per punt this past season, sacrificing distance for accuracy as 36 of his 73 punts were downed inside opponents' 20-yard-lines. Amazingly, 17 of his punts this past season were downed inside opponent 10-yard-lines.
