Tyrone Willingham Presented Eddie Robinson Coach of Distinction Award
Nov. 30, 2000
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford University head football coach Tyrone Willingham has been selected winner of the third annual State Farm Eddie Robinson Coach of Distinction Award. The award honors an outstanding college football coach and role model for career achievement.
Willingham, who recently completed his sixth season at Stanford, was selected by a five-member panel of judges chosen by Eddie Robinson.
'I am honored and humbled to be selected as the Eddie Robinson Coach of Distinction,' said Willingham. 'Coach Robinson embodied the true spirit of what it is to be a role model and to be honored in his name means a great deal to me.'
The award honors one active college football head coach who best exemplifies the qualities that are coach Eddie Robinson's legacy - a role model and mentor to students and players, an active member of the community and an accomplished college football coach from a Division 1A or 1AA school.
Willingham, who is active in several community events and organizations, follows Joe Paterno of Penn State and Phil Fulmer of Tennessee as winners of the award.
Willingham was recognized in a congratulatory announcement on NBC during the 2000 State Farm Bayou Classic on November 25. He will appear in a full-page print advertisement in the December 4 issue of Sports Illustrated.
In addition, a $10,000 cash prize will be donated to the Stanford University general scholarship fund in Willingham's honor.
