Duck Wrestlers Fifth After First Day of Las Vegas Invite.

Dec. 1, 2000

STATE LINE, Nev. - The University of Oregon wrestling team opened the Las Vegas Invitational Friday with three Ducks still alive in championship bracket action and two others still competing in the consolation bracket. As a team, the Ducks are tied for fifth in the 53-team field with 60 points, while Illinois leads the competition with 85.5 points.

Three Ducks remain in contention for weight class titles - sophomore Brian Watson (133 pounds) and All-America seniors Doug Lee (187) and Chael Sonnen (197).

Watson (133) posted wins Friday over Nate Mascarenas of Colorado Mines, 10-3, Luke Christiansen of North Dakota State, 7-2, Foldy Dowd of Michigan, 10-3, and Sean Kegal of Buffalo, 7-2.

Lee (184) opened with a pin of Mike Croyle from Pittsburgh at 4:20, followed by a technical fall over Mark Dubrobich of Colorado Mines, 21-5, a 16-4 decision over Josh Burt of North Idaho, and a 13-4 decision over Buffalo's Josh States.

Sonnen (197) began with a pin of Northern Colorado's Tom Clemen at 2:45, followed by a 12-2 decision over Stanford's Fred Luminoso, a 4-1 win over Zach Brienteneach, North Carolina State, and a pin of Lassen's Richard Paulikonas at 1:18.

'We have had some outstanding performances tonight,' Oregon coach Chuck Kearney said. 'Brian is starting to open up and putting the points on the board like he's been capable of. He's getting some big spreads and wrestling really well. Doug dominated his opponents, and is scoring bonus points with the pins and tech decisions, and Chael is doing the same - that's stuff we have to do with the front line firepower we have.'

A pair of other Ducks are still alive in the consolation quarterfinals after going 3-1 Friday - Eugene Harris (157) and Shaun Williams (125).

Other Duck competitors ending action Friday included Leif Williams (125), Casey Hunt (141), Tony Overstake (149) and Eric Webb (heavyweight).

'Williams is wrestling a very good tournament and lost to a national champion in the semifinal,' Kearney said. 'Eugene lost a heartbreaker to a nationally ranked guy and is wrestling extremely well.

'Now, we want to get a good night sleep and hopefully put two guys in the final and have the other three guys take third. We lost some close matches today, and we need those other guys now out of the tournament to get over the hump and believe that they can compete at this level of competition.'

Action concludes Saturday evening at the Star of the Desert Arena in State Line, Nevada.
