Dec. 1, 2000

LONG BEACH, Calif. - - The Oregon State women's swim team set school records three times in Friday's final round on the second day of competition at the Speedo Cup in Long Beach California at the Belmont Plaza.

The Beavers are in fourth place with a total of 544 points with competition remaining Saturday. OSU trails third-place Hawaii by 12.5 points and passed UCLA on the second day of competition. OSU would likely have been in third had the 800-yard freestyle relay team not been disqualified for a false start.

'We raced really well today,' OSU coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. 'A few swimmers could use a little rest, but overall they're doing very well. We have something to work for tomorrow in getting into third place.'

The 200 medley relay team of Suzanne Starkey, Birte Steven, Bonnie Renwick, and Arianna Higuera shattered the old school mark with their time of 1:44.90 as they took second. Starkey, Paula Finlay, Kristin Martinec, and Higuera held the former record time of 1:46.30, which they set last season.

Renwick set a school record in the 100 butterfly with her time of 57.04, while Naya Higashijima swam to a 57.17, both times would were faster than Martinec's old best of 57.20, set in 1999. Renwick took ninth and Higashijima 10th.

Birte Steven continued her assault on the OSU record books as she lowered the 100 breaststroke standard for the third time this season with a time of 1:02.45 en route to a win. The freshman, who has won 13 races this season, beat her old record of 1:03.22. She also earned consideration for the NCAA Championships.

Starkey was 0.05 away from a school record in the 100 backstroke, as she swam to a 57.27.Finlay moved into second place on the OSU list of top-10 performers in the 400 individual medley with her time of 4:28.30.
