Women's Volleyball To Play At UC Santa Barbara In Second Round Of NCAA Tournament
Dec. 1, 2000
Santa Barbara, Calif. - The 18th-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team (19-11) will battle #14 UC Santa Barbara (24-7) in a second round NCAA Tournament match at the Thunderdome on Friday, December 1 (7:30 p.m.). The Cardinal advanced to the second round with a 3-0 sweep of Loyola Marymount (15-11, 15-6, 15-9) in a first round NCAA Tournament match on Thursday night. The Gauchos, host of the first and second rounds, also had a 3-0 victory over Texas-San Antonio (15-5, 15-5, 15-11) to earn an opportunity to face the Cardinal.
Stanford needs a win over the Gauchos to continue its string of 20 straight trips to at least the NCAA Round of 16. The Cardinal is playing arguably its best volleyball of the season heading into Friday's match with a season-high five-match winning streak, including a victory over then #14 Santa Clara in Stanford's season-finale. The Gauchos have won five of their last six matches and nine of 11.
Logan Tom paces the Cardinal, averaging 5.67 kills per game. UC Santa Barbara is paced by Danielle Bauer's 4.52 kills per contest.
UC Santa Barbara holds an all-time 8-6 edge in the 14 meetings between the schools. However, Stanford swept the Gauchos last season in the finals of the Pacific Regional (15-10, 15-10, 15-3) to earn a trip to the NCAA Final Four.
The winner of Friday's second round contest will advance to the NCAA West Regionals.
