Beavers Wrestle To Fifth Place In Las Vegas Classic

Dec. 2, 2000

STATELINE, Nev. - Oregon State earned fifth place in the 52-team field and the Beavers had four wrestlers place Saturday as the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Classic wrestling tournament wrapped up. OSU heavyweight Jason Cooley placed second, taking third were 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen and 174-pounder Nathan Coy, and finishing eighth was 125-pounder Nathan Navarro.

'It was a good weekend for us,' Oregon State head coach Joe Wells said. 'We made some progress. We wrestled aggressively, our conditioning was good and we went after it, but we made a lot of mistakes and that's what we need to focus our attention on - the little things that are the difference between being a pretty good team and being a championship team.'

Illinois won the tournament with 156 points, followed by Nebraska with 113.5, Lehigh with 105.5, Arizona State with 89.5 and OSU with 88.5. The Beavers racked up a load of team bonus points in the tournament, scoring three pins, six technical falls and nine major decisions.

The 11th-ranked Cooley Cooley reached the finals with a 4-2 win over eighth-ranked Tommy Rowlands of Ohio State in the semifinals, but was unable to wrestle the championship match and was a medical forfeit.

'Jason wrestled very well,' Wells said. 'He was controlled, he was aggressive, he stayed in good position ... there wasn't any doubt in my mind he was the best heavyweight in the field, and he was on his way to showing that.'

The 10th-ranked Jorgensen dropped a tough semifinal match, losing to third-ranked Kirk White of Boise State 2-1 in a tiebreaker. He bounced back to beat fifth-ranked Shaun Shapert of Edinboro 2-1 in a tiebreaker for third place.

'Eric just needs to open up more,' Wells said. 'He needs to be more aggressive, take more shots and initiate more scoring opportunities. He's tough on the mat and can get away from most anybody, he just needs to be more aggressive on his feet.'

Coy, ranked 15th, was pinned by second-ranked Josh Koscheck of Edinboro in 2:30 in the semifinals. He took third place with a 10-8 win over Mauricio Wright of San Francisco State.

'He was very aggressive,' Wells said. 'He's got some things he needs to work on in terms of better position from the bottom and better control coming out, but he's in great shape and gets after it. He was behind 5-0 in the match for third (vs. Wright) and came back and took the kid down three or four times in a row and just ran him out of gas.'

Navarro, ranked eighth, took a 4-0 victory over Ryan O'Connor of South Dakota State in the fourth round of wrestlebacks. He then lost 9-3 to Shawn Williams of Oregon in the wrestleback semifinals and 6-0 to eighth-ranked Ryan Escobar of Illinois in the seventh-place final.

'Nathan wrestled pretty well this weekend,' Wells said. 'It was a good field in that weight class, with the No. 1-ranked kid (Stephen Abas of Fresno State) and kid a few others who were highly-ranked.'

OSU (1-0 overall, 1-0 Pacific-10) returns to action next Saturday at the Nebraska Duals in Lincoln, Neb. The Beavers will face sixth-ranked Nebraska, 19th-ranked Ohio State and Nebraska-Omaha.
