Women's Basketball Tops San Diego

San Diego - Senior Denise Woods scored a team-high 16 points and added seven rebounds as four Trojans scored in double figures to lead the USC women's basketball team to a 70-56 win over the University of San Diego Toreros in front of 1,393 at the Jenny Craig Arena in San Diego on Saturday (Dec. 2).
With the win, USC improves to 3-2. San Diego falls to 2-1. It was the Women of Troy's third victory in a row after dropping their first two games to open the season.
For San Diego, Amber Jansen poured in a game-high 18 points, Melissa Glazebrook added 17 points and Kerri Nakamoto scored 11.
USC shot a season-high 50 per cent from the field and outrebounded San Diego 41-28.
It was a game full of scoring runs. USC broke open a 12-12 tie with an 11-0 run, keyed by Carter's five points, but San Diego answered with a 17-2 run thanks to six points by Jansen and a three-pointer by Nakamoto to go ahead 29-23. The Women of Troy bounced back with an 11-2 run to take the lead into halftime, 34-31.
The second half was close for the first three minutes, but USC blew the game open with a 23-6 run culminating in a nifty pass from Carter to Cheeks for a lay-in on a fast break to give the Women of Troy their biggest lead, 61-43. From there, USC cruised to the win.
The Women of Troy next travel north to take on Sacramento State on Saturday (Dec. 9) at 2 p.m.
