Dec. 3, 2000

LOS ANGELES - USC sophomore women's swimmer Michala Kwasny and men's junior Tamas Kerekjarto each won the 400y IM and the 200y butterfly, respectively, to lead the Trojans to the overall team titles at the 2000 Speedo Cup which concluded Saturday (Dec. 2) at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, Calif.

The No. 8 women's team finished first with 988 points while the No. 6 men's squad won with 1,134 points.

Other USC winners from Friday and Saturday included sophomores Asa Sandlund (16:30.46) and Erik Vendt (15:23.88) in the women's and men's 1650y free, respectively, senior Gabe Woodward in the 100y fly (50.17) and the men's 800y free relay team of Kerekjarto, junior Mark Warkentin and freshmen Trent Staley and Klete Keller (6:37.77).

Kwasny's time of 4:15.02 was a season best and an NCAA automatic qualifying time. Her winning time in the 200y fly of 1:59.62 was well ahead of second-place, though not quite as fast as she went against Arizona State (1:58.53).

Kerekjarto's time of 3:51.30 in the 400y IM and 1:48.33 in the 200y fly were both USC season-bests and NCAA consideration times.

Both Sandlund's and Vendt's times in the 1650y free were NCAA consideration times, as was the effort from the men's 800y free relay.

Other noteworthy performances included Corrie Murphy taking second behind Kwasny in the 400y IM in a season-best 4:17.73 (NCAA consideration) and Vendt finishing second behind Kerekjarto in the same event in 3:52.56 (NCAA consideration). Freshman Jana Krohn's third in the 100y fly off 55.61 was a season-best and an NCAA consideration time.

Freshman Klete Keller, rounding into shape after returning from the Olympics in Sydney, took second in the 200y free in an NCAA consideration time of 1:38.79. He also finished third in the 1650y free in a consideration time of 15:31.67.
