Oregon State Duals (No. 14 Oregon State, Cal-Davis, Pacific, Ore., and Central Washington), noon

Final exams may be out of the way, but it will still be a busy week for 14th-ranked Oregon State (2-1 overall, 1-0 Pacific-10).

The Beavers travel to 17th-ranked Oregon (2-0, 2-0) for the season's first Civil War dual meet. OSU then returns home for the Oregon State Duals against Cal-Davis (2-1, 0-1), a Pacific-10 foe, Pacific (2-1), which is ranked 14th nationally in Division III, and Central Washington (2-2), which is ranked 18th in Division II.

A Civil War dual is reason enough for both teams to be ready for Wednesday's meet, but the early-season success of both the Beavers and Ducks adds to the anticipation.

'We're really excited about the matchup,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'Oregon has a very good team, we're both ranked in the same area nationally.

'We're really looking forward to wrestling tough, filling up the seven minutes (of each match) and making them work hard.'

OSU has six nationally-ranked wrestlers and Oregon has five, and matches at three weights will pair ranked wrestlers: 125 pounds, with OSU's Nathan Navarro (No. 15 Amateur Wrestling News, No. 17 InterMat) and Oregon's Shawn Williams (No. 5 AWN, No. 4 IM), 157 pounds, with OSU's Eric Jorgensen (No. 5 AWN, No. 7 IM) and Oregon's Eugene Harris (No. 19 AWN), and 184 pounds, with OSU's Isaac Weber (No. 17 AWN, No. 16 IM) and Oregon's Doug Lee (No. 4 AWN, No. 5 IM).

Also ranked for the Beavers are 141-pounder Shane Cunanan (No. 18 AWN, No. 20 IM), 174-pounder Nathan Coy (No. 10 AWN, No. 15 IM) and heavyweight Jason Cooley (No. 5 AWN, No. 2 IM). Also ranked for the Ducks are 133-pounder Brian Watson (No. 8 AWN, No. 13 IM) and 197-pounder Chael Sonnen (No. 6 AWN, No. 6 IM).

Both Oregon State and Oregon competed in the Las Vegas Classic on Dec. 1-2, with OSU finishing fifth and Oregon seventh in the 52-team field.

'We've both got five or six ranked guys,' Wells said. 'It's going to be a fight, and that's great.

'We've got to engage them, wrestle aggressively and set the tempo. We can't stand around and wait.'

In the Oregon State Duals, the Beavers will wrestle Central Washington, Pacific and Cal-Davis in that order. There will be two mats in Gill Coliseum to allow the three visiting schools to wrestle duals against each other at the same time OSU is competing.

'It should be a really good afternoon,' Wells said. 'We hope we can get some other guys some matches and some good competition.'

Cal-Davis, which tied for 45th at the Las Vegas Classic, has no nationally-ranked wrestlers. A pair of Aggies are in the Pac-10 rankings, with 174-pounder Adrian Garcia and 197-pounder Brandon Arsenault both fourth at their weight.

Central Washington also tied for 45th at the Las Vegas Classic. The Wildcats' Jess Workman is ranked eighth in the nation among Division II heavyweights.

Pacific was 51st at the Las Vegas Classic. Two Boxers are in the Division III national rankings: Ian Courter, second at 184 pounds, and Titus Fulton, third at 197 pounds.

Oregon State also picked up victories from Navarro, Pennell and Coy.

OREGON STATE HEAD COACH JOE WELLS: Joe Wells is in his ninth season as Oregon State's head coach. Since Wells took over prior to the 1992-93 season, OSU has a 93-54-1 career dual meet record at OSU.

The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships four times in Wells' tenure, tying for ninth place in 1998 and placing eighth in 1996, second in 1995 and fourth in 1994.

Under Wells, OSU has had two national champions, 15 All-Americans and 16 conference champions.

Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state.

Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a two-time placer at the Big Ten meet and the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State.

OSU moved its home wrestling meets into Gill Coliseum in 1956-57, when Dale Thomas became head coach. Since then, the arena has hosted conference championship meets 13 times and it was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1961 and 1980.

For the past several years, Oregon State has averaged over 900 fans per dual meet at Gill Coliseum. That includes crowds of over 2,200 for each of the last 2 home Civil War duals against Oregon.

OREGON STATE WRESTLING TICKETS: All Oregon State wrestling tickets are sold on a general admission basis. They are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens (age 62 and over) and students (high school and under). OSU students are admitted free with an all-sports pass or for $1 with their OSU student identification card.

Local Bi-Mart stores have coupons good for 2 admissions for the price of 1 adult admission for all OSU home wrestling meets.

Wrestling is also part of the OSU 7-Sport Pass, which is good for general admission seating at all home contests in wrestling, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, women's basketball and baseball. The 7-Sport Pass is $130 for a family pass that admits 2 adults and 2 children, $80 for an adult pass, and $60 for a senior citizen or student pass.
