Freshman Sara Platzer Sets New Meet Record

The UCLA women's swimming and diving team completed the first portion of the 2000-01 season and will not return to the pool till Januray 5th. The divers will compete in the three- day Georgia Invitatioanl in Athens, Georgia, while the swimmers retun to action on January 13 to host Washington State and UC San Diego in a double dual meet. The meet will be the final home contest of the season for UCLA.
UCLA Wins Texas Invitational
The UCLA swimming and diving team won its second invitational of the season after posting 553.50 points to win the Texas Invitational on Decemer 3rd. Stanford finished second with 529.50 while the invitational's host, Texas, finished third with 501.50. Arizona was fourth with 495.50 and Wisconsin finished fifth with 398.50 points.
After the second day of competiton,the Bruins were in third place with a score of 349.50 and trailed Stanford and Texas who scored 370.50 and 354.50, respectively. UCLA put together a strong performance in the final day of events to win the meet despite not winning any individual events or relays. However, UCLA finished among the top five in nine individual events and three relays.
Senior Beth Goodwin led the way for UCLA after posting a pair of third place finishes and NCAA qualifying times in the 100 Fly (53.43) and 200 Fly (1:58.14). She also swam a leg on both the 400 Free Relay (4th, 3:23.99) and 200 Medley Relay (3rd, 1:42.09) Freshman Sara Platzer continued to lead the Bruins in the sprints after finishing third in the 50 Free (22.90) and the 100 Free (49.54). Both times met the NCAA qualifying standard. Platzer also finished seventh in the 200 Free with a time of 1:49.33. Erica Shugart also put in a stellar performance in the 50 Free after touching the wall in the fifth position with an NCAA qualifying time of 23.22. Lyndee Hovsepian also had a great showing in Texas as she qualified for the NCAAs with a third place finish in the 200 Breast (2:15.20) and a sixth place finish in the 100 Breast (1:03.49). Erin Zehntner also swam well as she clocked an NCAA qualifying time of 16:48.36 in the 1650 Free to place sixth. Freshman Brooke Winkler was another standout as she posted qualifying times in both the 200 (2:02.62) and 400 (4:18.44) Individual Medley to finish ninth and fifth, respectively.
The Bruins were just as strong in the diving as freshman Michelle Brown was the top Bruin finisher in the one-meter event with a score of 250.20 to finish fifth. Senior Anne Baghramian finished sixth with a score of 237.90. Regan Gosnell continued to impress after finishing fourth in the three-meter with a score of 492.70. In the Bruins first competition of the season on the platform, Baghramian posted a score of 370.50 for a fourth place finish, while Gosnell placed sixth with a score of 337.90.
Women's Swimming Have Strong Showing At Speedo Cup
The UCLA swimming and diving team completed competition at the Speedo Cup on a high note. The Bruins sent a split squad to the three-day meet in Long Beach on November 30th.
Overall the Bruins finished among the top ten in 12 of the 18 events. Leading the way for the Bruins was Naoko Watanabe who finished third in the 200 Back with a time of 2:02.57. Freshman Leslie Hovsepain also swam superbly after finshing sixth in the 200 Breast (2:20.28) and seventh in the 100 Breast (1:05.55). Kristen Lewis was also impressive after clocking a time of 2:20.28 in the 200 Breast and finished sixth. Other notable performances included three Bruins in the 1650 Free as Beth Boehm, Erin Thomas and Emily Melina finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.
UCLA also showed great production in the relays as the team of Melina, Erin Thomas, Kristen Tinney and Boehm posted a time of 7:38.83 in the 800 Free relay to finished fourth. UCLA was just as successful in the 400 Medley Real after the tandem of Katie Winkelhaus, Hovsepian, Lewis and Stacy Kearney touched the wall in the seventh position with a time of 3:54.99.
