Beavers Upset In Civil War Dual
Dec. 13, 2000
EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon State couldn't knock off a top-six wrestler in the final two matches Wednesday night, and as a result the 14th-ranked Beavers were upset by 17th-ranked Oregon 22-16 in Pacific-10 wrestling at McArthur Court. OSU (2-2 overall, 1-1 Pacific-10) led by one point heading into the final two matches, but Oregon (3-0, 3-0) got a 6-2 victory from fourth-ranked Doug Lee over 17th-ranked Isaac Weber at 184 pounds and a 14-2 major decision from sixth-ranked Chael Sonnen over Jason Lovell at 197 for the win.
'They were definitely pointing for this match,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said of the Ducks. 'They came out and wrestled hard and got after us ... it was a tough meet, and our hats are off to them. We've got a lot of things to work on.'
The loss ended OSU's four-meet winning streak over the Ducks, the Beavers still lead the all-time series 94-22-4 and are 15-4-1 in the last 20 meetings. Oregon State now heads home for the OSU Duals on Saturday, starting at noon, the Beavers will wrestle Central Washington, Pacific (Ore.) and Cal-Davis in back-to-back-to-back meets.
At Oregon, the Beavers found themselves in a big hole after a shocker in the night's first match. OSU heavyweight Jason Cooley, ranked fifth in the nation, was pinned by Oregon's unranked Eric Webb in 6:52. Cooley had been taken down in the first 10 seconds and spent the rest of the match trying to come from behind, after being taken down to fall behind 7-4 with 21 seconds left, trying to struggle free, Cooley found himself in further trouble and Webb finished him off.
'That's a match we expected to win,' Wells said. 'If we don't give up six points and win the match ...
'We didn't expect that outcome. But as a team, you've got to pick it up when someone falters.'
The Beavers found themselves down 12-0 after three matches. Oregon's fifth-ranked Shaun Williams beat OSU's 15th-ranked Nathan Navarro 12-7 at 125 pounds, and the Ducks' eighth-ranked Brian Watson edged the Beavers' Ben Richards 4-2 at 133 pounds.
Shane Cunanan then got things going for the Beavers in dramatic fashion, as the nation's 18th-ranked 141-pounder pinned Casey Hunt in just 45 seconds. Cunanan scored the pin without ever being awarded a takedown, with Hunt draped over his back, head-down, Cunanan managed to roll him to the mat and force his shoulders to the mat.
'I pinned somebody like that before, at the high school nationals,' said Cunanan, who improved to 9-3 with his third straight win. 'He's over the top of you and you hook his arm, roll him up and try to stack him ... I didn't know if I'd pin him or not, but I knew it (the chance) was there.'
OSU's comeback continued at 157 pounds, where fifth-ranked Eric Jorgensen blanked 19th-ranked Eugene Harris 5-0, Jorgensen is now 13-2 this season. Beaver 165-pounder Jed Pennell then beat Luke Larwin 3-1 to pull Oregon State within 15-12 in the team score, and OSU took its only lead of the night at 16-15 when 10th-ranked Nathan Coy outscored the Ducks' Leif Williams 23-13.
'Cunanan, Jorgensen, Pennell and Coy really got out there and got after them,' Wells said. 'But then they (the Ducks) are a lot more experienced (in the final two matches).'
Oregon's biggest guns were waiting at 184 and 197, with the Beavers needing an upset for the team win. Weber nearly completed some shots for scores in the first period at 184 pounds, but Lee finally scored a takedown with 13 seconds left in the period and led the rest of the way. At 197, Sonnen - who didn't compete last season to concentrate on a bid for the United States' Greco-Roman Olympic team - rolled to a 12-2 lead over Lovell by the end of the first period en route to the win.
