STAMFORD, Conn. - Oregon State's Gina Schmidt was one of 22 athletes named to the Verizon Academic All-American Volleyball Team, which was announced Tuesday. Schmidt was one of seven first team honorees.

A junior outside hitter from Beaverlodge, Alberta, Schmidt carries a 4.00 grade point average as a business major.

Schmidt was an All-Pacific-10 honoree this season after leading the Beavers with 548 kills and 397 digs. Her 548 kills rank third on OSU's single-season charts, while her 397 digs are sixth-best for a season. Schmidt is just the fourth OSU player to be named to the All-Pac-10 team.

She was also a first team Pac-10 All-Academic selection and a first team Verizon District VIII All-Academic honoree this year. This is the first year she has been honored as an Academic All-American.

Schmidt is the first Oregon State volleyball player to earn Academic All-America recognition. Twenty-one Oregon State athletes in nine sports have combined to earn Academic All-American honors a total of 28 times. Schmidt is the 10th OSU athlete to earn first team recognition.

In order to be eligible for the team, athletes must carry a minimum 3.20 grade point average, be a starter or key reserve and be in at least their second year of competition at their current school.
