UCLA Track Announces Early Recruit Signings

UCLA track announces four recruits who signed early National Letters of Intent. All four will be incoming Bruin freshmen next fall.
Alejandra Barrientos (San Lorenzo V, Felton, CA) - A postseason leg stress fracture suffered at the California State meet didn't keep Barrientos from earning 2000 Track & Field News prep All-America honors. Last spring, T & F News ranked her as the nation's No. 2 miler and the No. 5 3200m performer, both All-America status. Her best marks were 4:48.27 in the mile (No. 3 high school mark in the U. S. last spring) and 10:11.19 in the 3200m (No. 1 in the U. S.). During the 1999-2000 prep season,Barrientos won the State Cross Country title and in track, captured the Arcadia 1600m and 3200m individual championships.
Briona Reynolds (Red River HS, Grand Forks, ND ) - Reynolds earned T & F News prep All-America honors in the discus, rated as the nation's No. 1 high school discus performer, with a best of 179-1. Last spring, she won the women's discus at the North Dakota State, Golden West, National Scholastic and USA Junior Championships. Reynolds' shot put mark of 48-2 1/4 was No. 7 in the U. S. In T & F News balloting for the Women's 2000 HS Athlete of the Year, Reynolds was fifth in the voting .
Robert Hambleton (Loyola HS) - Looking to provide sprint depth to the men's program, Hambleton, a 100m/200m performer, qualified for the CIF Finals last season and was an All-League selection.
Chadd Smith (Camarillo, CA HS) - Before being sidelined by off-season knee surgery, Smith last spring won the high jump at Arcadia and placed third in the CA State meet. Smith is a leading contender for U. S. and State high jump prep honors this spring.
