Navarro In Midlands Semifinals

EVANSTON, Ill. - Oregon State's Nathan Navarro still has championship hopes in the Midlands Open wrestling tournament and three other Beavers could still place as high as third after Friday's opening rounds at Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Navarro has reached the semifinals at 125 pounds while OSU 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen, 174-pounder Nathan Coy and heavyweight Jason Cooley are still alive in the wrestleback bracket. The tournament's final rounds will be held Saturday, team scores were not available Friday night.
OSU 133-pounder Ben Richards, 141-pounder Shane Cunanan, 184-pounder Isaac Weber and heavyweight Andy Bowlby were eliminated in Friday's matches, but all four won at least one match before being knocked out.
'It's a very high-quality tournament,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said of the invitational event, which includes wrestlers from 13 of the nation's top 25 teams plus a number of outstanding post-collegiate entrants.
The Beavers (5-2 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10) are ranked 14th in the nation as a team. Nationally-ranked individuals for OSU are Navarro (No. 17 Amateur Wrestling News, No. 17 InterMat), Richards (No. 20 AWN, No. 19 IM), Cunanan (No. 17 AWN, No. 16 IM), Jorgensen (No. 5 AWN, No. 7 IM), Coy (No. 9 AWN, No. 12 IM), Weber (No. 19 AWN, No. 17 IM) and Cooley (No. 3 AWN, No. 7 IM).
