Beavers Ninth In Midlands Open

EVANSTON, Ill. - Oregon State placed ninth in the 53-team field as the Midlands Open wrestling tournament concluded Saturday evening at Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena. No. 14 OSU had four placers, as 125-pounder Nathan Navarro and 174-pounder Nathan Coy finished third, 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen was fourth and heavyweight Jason Cooley was eighth.
'I'm very pleased with how we did on the second day of the tournament,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'We won some close matches and we were very competitive in a very tough tournament. We were pleased with our performance, and we're anxious to get home and get ready for Iowa to come in.'
The Beavers (5-2 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10) return home to meet No. 3 Iowa on Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m. That will be the Hawkeyes' first-ever wrestling visit to Corvallis.
Second-ranked Minnesota won the tournament with 144 points, followed by No. 4 Iowa State with 133. The Beavers had 55.5 points to earn ninth place, with Pacific-10 rivals No. 10 Arizona State and No. 16 Oregon tying for 10th place.
Navarro, ranked 17th nationally, took third by beating No. 14 Chris Williams of Michigan State 9-3. Coy, ranked ninth nationally, beat No. 6 Perry Parks of Iowa State 11-8 in the third-place final.
Jorgensen, ranked fifth nationally, beat Griff Powell of Illinois 3-1 in the seventh-place final at 157 pounds. Cooley, ranked third nationally, fell 4-3 to No. 20 Eric Webb of Oregon in the seventh-place final at heavyweight.
