Oregon Wrestling Finishes Tied For 10th At Midlands Tournament

The University of Oregon wrestling team finished tied for 10th with Arizona State at the Midlands Tournament in Evanston, Ill. Minnesota finished first with 144 points, followed by Iowa State with 133 points.
'Overall we're pleased with how we wrestled in some spots,' head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'We scheduled a very tough December schedule and at times we're meeting the challenge, but there are times we need to dig down and improve.'
Senior All-American Chael Sonnen was Oregon's top-finisher, defeating Zach Thompson of Iowa State 4-2 to finish third in the 197 weight class.
'Chael wrestled very consistent and very controlled,' Kearney said. 'I'm pleased with how he wrestled and his loss came to a defending national champion.'
Fellow All-American Doug Lee (184) defeated R.D. Pursell of Arizona State to finish fifth. Heavyweight Eric Webb continued to wrestle tough, defeating No. 2 Jason Cooley of Oregon State 4-3 to finish seventh.
'Eric is continuing to defeat ranked opponents and is showing signs of what we knew he would be capable of,' Kearney said. 'He is consistently improving.'
The Ducks will continue to see tough competition when they travel to Oklahoma Jan. 2 and Oklahoma State Jan. 4.
