Boness & Reed Close Duck Action in Olympic Trials

July 23, 2000

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A pair of Duck school record holders - sophomores Jason Boness and Niki Reed - competed in the preliminary rounds of the men's high jump and women's pole vault and concluded action among current UO athletes at the recent U.S. Olympic Trials, at Cal State Sacramento's Hornet Stadium.

In the women's pole vault qualifying last Friday, Reed failed to clear the opening height of 13-2 1/4 (4.02 meters) - one of 21 jumpers to miss on their opening three tries. 'I had a couple of good attempts,' Reed said, 'one of which I almost had. It was a little disappointing, but at the same time, it was a fun meet to be at and the crowd and atmosphere were great.'

Among the 16 athletes that did meet the opening standard, the top three contenders came back two days to claim Olympic berths. Area native Stacy Dragila broke the world record in the process with her clearance of 15-2 1/4 (4.63m), followed by Nike's Kellie Suttle (14'06.25' / Nike 4.43m) and Melissa Mueller (14'02.50' / 4.33m).

Reed made championship trips earlier in the season to both NCAA finales, finishing fourth indoors (13-5 1/4) and 13th outdoors (13-1 1/2), although a knee injury slowed her at the end of her outdoor season at the Pac-10 and NCAA Championships.

On the men's side in the high jump, Boness was affected by a knee injury that occurred the week before, and missed his attempts at the preliminary round height of 7-2 1/2 (2.20 meters). The recent Pac-10 champion was one of 11 entrants in the 22-man field that failed to advance. 'I had some big hopes coming in, but I wasn't able to capitalize,' Boness said. 'I had an OK try on my first attempt, but I got tentative after that and didn't get the speed I needed.'

In the event final two days later on Sunday, 1996 Olympic champion Charles Austin of Nike won with a clearance of 7-7 1/4 (2.32m), followed by Kenny Evans (7-5 1/4, 2.27m) and Nathan Leeper (7-5 1/4, 2.27m) .

Boness capped his first season with the Ducks with a school record of 7-5 which claimed the Pac-10 title, then claimed his second All-America honor with his seventh-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (7-2 1/4).
