Peters 10th in Women's 5K Final in Olympic Trials

July 21, 2000

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A pair of former University of Oregon distance runners continued to carry the Duck distance tradition Friday at the U.S. Olympic Trials at Cal State Sacramento's Hornet Stadium.

Nike's Nick Rogers, a former transfer for the Ducks, became the second Duck to finish top-three at the meet with his third-place finish in the men's 5,000 meters. The Snoqualmie, Wash., native took the lead with three laps remaining and held the lead until less than 200 to go to finish third (13:29.48) behind Fila's Adam Goucher (13:27.06) and Nike's Brad Hauser (13:27.31).

Rogers must now run a second faster to meet the other contingency for his Olympic spot which is to run faster than the Olympic `A' standard of 13:29.00 - a time he has until September 11 to run. He will likely run two upcoming races in Europe in August - in Hechtel, Aug. 5 and in Zurich Aug. 11. If he doesn't meet the mark, collegian Matt Lane from William & Mary earns the third U.S. spot since he is next highest finisher from the U.S. Olympic Trials (13:37.03) and also met the `A' standard earlier this season.

Rogers competed for the Ducks during the 1996 cross country season and lettered for the third-place NCAA finishers.

On the women's side, former NCAA champion Annette Peters finished 10th in the 5,000 meters (15:37.99). The Eugenean missed part of training in April and May with a stress reaction in her leg. Earlier in the Olympic Trials, she finished . Nike's Regina Jacobs won the event in a new American record (14:45.35), edging Reebok's Deena Drossin (15:11.55). Nike's Elva Dryer (third, 15:12.07) claimed the final Olympic spot. Eugeneann Clare Taylor finished sixth in the final (15:30.44) while occasional Eugene visitor-in-training Anne Marie Lauck from Nike finished fifth (15:23.71) and may receive an Olympic invite if Jacobs (1,500) and Drossin (10,000) opt to run other events they won earlier in the Olympic Trials.

Peters, a 1992 Olympian in the 3,000, also ran the 10,000 meters at the first day of the 2000 Olympic Trials, and finished fifth in a time of 32:09.49. Drossin won the race (31:51.05), ahead of adidas' Jen Rhines (31:58.34), Nike's Libbie Hickman (fourth, 31:58.68) and Lauck (fourth, 32:01.86).

Earlier in the meet, the Ducks notched another Olympic invite as former NCAA champion Kelly Blair-LaBounty finished third in the heptathlon with 6,180 points.
