No. 16 Oregon Wrestling Nearly Upsets No. 6 Oklahoma

Jan. 2, 2001

Norman, Okla. - The 16th-ranked University of Oregon wrestling team fell 24-21 to No. 6 Oklahoma in front of 257 fans at the Oklahoma University Field House. Oregon is 3-1 overall, 3-0 Pac-10 and the Sooners improve to 2-1.

'We scheduled tough opponents so we could compete against the best wrestlers,' Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'When you wrestle against top teams, you need to finish matches and fight through tough situations. We lost because they scored the bonus points and got the pins they needed.'

Oregon fell behind 24-0 before staging a major comeback that began with No. 4 Doug Lee's four-point technical fall against Nick Curcio at the 184-pound weight class. Lee improves to 13-5 for the season and is undefeated in dual meet competition.

'Doug came out after Oklahoma had dominated five straight bouts and did a great job of changing the momentum,' Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said.

The momentum created by Lee carried through Oregon's next four match-ups, with All-American Chael Sonnen (197) narrowing the gap, 24-9, with a technical fall against No. 10 Waymon May. Sonnen allowed May to score just one point and scored the five-point technical fall with 1:23 remaining in the second period.

Sophomore Eric Webb continued his string of upsets, pinning No. 12 Leonce Crump at 5:23. Webb was behind 4-1 with 1:57 remaining in the third period before pinning Crump with just 37 seconds left. The 20th-ranked Webb is 15-5 overall this season and has won by fall six times. Webb needs just four more pins to move onto Oregon's career list for pins in a season.

'Eric Webb fought through a deficit and found a way to win against the 12th-ranked wrestler in the country,' Kearney said. 'That's what we need our guys to do, we need them to find ways to win.'

At 125, No. 5 Shaun Williams defeated No. 11 Bo Maynes to pull Oregon within six points, 24-18. No. 8 Brian Watson (133) secured Oregon's fifth victory with a 6-3 decision over No.10 Witt Durden, but Oregon fell just short of the upset.

'I've been around long enough to see Oregon lose 33-6 against a team like Oklahoma,' Kearney said. 'I'm very pleased with a five/five split.'
