Pac-10 play begins this Thursday. Defending Pac-10 co-champions ARIZONA and STANFORD square off on Saturday in Tucson. . . Three Pac-10 teams find themselves in the polls this week - STANFORD (No. 2 AP, No. 2 USA Today/ESPN), ARIZONA (No. 16 AP, No. 15 USA Today/ESPN), and USC (No. 20 AP, No. 19 USA Today/ESPN).

PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK- SAM CLANCY, USC
USC junior forward Sam Clancy has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 25 - Jan. 1, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Clancy, from Fairview, Ohio, averaged 19.5 points,10.5 rebounds, 4.5 blocks and 2.5 steals last week as the Trojans posted a 1-1 record, losing 63-61 at Northwestern and defeating Long Beach State 95-73.
Clancy scored 15 points on 7-of-14 (.500) shooting with 11 rebounds, three blocks and four steals in the two-point loss at Northwestern. He posted his third consecutive double-double, and fourth of the season, with 24 points on 12-of-15 (.800) shooting, 10 rebounds and a career-high tying six blocked shots in the win over Long Beach State. For the week, Clancy shot 19-of-29 (.655) from the field.
It is the first weekly award for Clancy, the 22nd all-time honor for the Trojans.

PAC-10 NOTES. . .
ARIZONA - The Wildcats have named Eugene Edgerson, Justin Wessel and Loren Woods as team captains for the 2000-01 season. Each of the three players honored are fifth-year seniors and have a combined 283 games of collegiate basketball experience. . . Arizona's 7-4 (.636) record heading into Pac-10 play next week is the team's worst non-conference record percentage-wise since the 1986-87 season, when the Cats had a 5-3 (.625) non-league mark entering conference play. . . Sophomore guard Jason Gardner continued his string of making at least two treys in every game this year. He leads the team with 33 treys and a 44.0 3-point FG percentage. . . With 25 points vs. Butler and 21 points vs. Mississippi State, Loren Woods became the first Wildcat this season to post back-to-back 20-point games. He leads the team with 17.4 ppg.
ARIZONA STATE - ASU is 21-4 (.840) at home in the past two years, where it hosts Stanford and Cal this week. . . ASU has won 10 straight vs. Cal in Tempe and is 19-3 vs. the Golden Bears at home since it joined the Pac-10. . . ASU has outrebounded its opponent in nine of its 11 games. . . ASU is averaging 15.0 offensive rebounds in its first 11 games and is outrebounding its opponents by 6.9 boards per contest. ASU led the Pac-10 in offensive rebounds last year at 15.78 per game. . . ASU has five players averaging in double figures, with junior Awvee Storey leading the way at 14.4 points per game. . . Alton Mason has 39 assists and 20 steals through 11 games with just 12 turnovers. . . ASU is 22-6 (.790) when leading at the half in the past two seasons.
CALIFORNIA - Senior forward Sean Lampley has led the Bears in scoring in each of the last seven games and in nine of 11 games for the season, averaging 17.9 points per game (3rd in the Pac-10). . . The Bears current seven-game winning streak equals the school's longest such streak under coach Ben Braun. Cal won seven in a row during the early portion of the 1998-99 season. . . Sophomore guard/forward Brian Wethers has a string of five straight games in which he has posted double figures in the scoring column, including a career-high 21 points against Georgia. He's averaging 12.8 ppg over that span.
OREGON - The Ducks will take on Oregon State this Saturday in the 313th meeting between the two teams. The Oregon-Oregon State series has by far been played more times than any other in the NCAA, Oregon State-Washington is next at 265. . . The Oregon offense has been in high-gear this season, averaging a league-leading 87.4 ppg, while shooting 50.1 percent from the field. . . The Ducks are also among the national leaders with 8.8 three-point field goals per game. . . Senior forward Julius Hicks has 15 blocks this season and his over one-third of the way to UO's season record of 42. . . Junior Frederick Jones is averaging 15.1 ppg (9th in the Pac-10), up from 9.7 ppg a year ago.
OREGON STATE - The Beavers play their next three games on the road against opponents that have a combined record of 28-4 -- at Oregon (9-1), at Stanford (11-0) and at Cal (8-3). . . Oregon State is shooting .739 from the free throw line (2nd in the Pac-10). The Beavers have not finished over 70 percent from the charity stripe since 1995 (.707).
STANFORD - The Cardinal lead the Pac-10 with a +25.0 scoring margin. . . Sophomore center Jason Collins has posted three double-doubles in the last five games. Jason and senior twin Jarron combine to average 24.3 points and 16.9 rebounds. The two have started together 20 times during their Stanford careers - the Cardinal have posted a 20-0 record during that span. . . Sophomore Casey Jacobsen is averaging 17.9 ppg (4th in the Pac-10), while shooting .492 (30-of-61) from three-point range.
UCLA - Senior guard Earl Watson posted a career-high 30 points vs. North Carolina. It was the most points by a Bruin since Kris Johnson scored 33 points vs. Arizona State in 1998. . . Junior center Dan Gadzuric was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field to score 18 points and grab 10 rebounds in UCLA's win at Purdue. It was his third double-double of the season and 10th for his career. . . Sophomore Jason Kapono ranks fifth on the UCLA career charts with 110 career three-pointers.
USC - With a 10-2 record, the Trojans have posted 10 wins prior to league play for the first time since 1976. USC opened the 1976 with a 11-1 record before finishing the year 12-15. . . With his five steals against Long Beach State, junior guard Brandon Granville has now had at least four steals in a game 13 times in his career. He has had at least three steals 23 times. He is fourth on USC's all time steals chart with 146. . . USC attempted a season-high 72 field goal attempts vs. Long Beach State, one off last year's high of 73 vs. North Carolina. USC also posted season highs in rebounds (44) and blocks (eight) vs. the 49ers. . . Junior forward Sam Clancy's double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds vs. Long Beach State was his third straight and fourth of the season.
WASHINGTON - Washington opens Pac-10 play at UCLA where it has lost its last 14 games at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, last winning on Jan. 29, 1987 when Andy Russo (UW) and Walt Hazzard (UCLA) were the coaches. . . Senior forward Will Perkins (5) and junior center Marlon Shelton (2) have combined for seven double-digit rebound games, matching last year's entire UW team season total. . . Eighth-year coach Bob Bender posted his 100th win at Washington on Dec. 20. Only Hec Edmundson (488), Marv Harshman (246) and Tippy Dye (156) have won more games as the Husky coach.
WASHINGTON STATE - Junior guard Mike Bush played his first game of the season after sitting out the fall semester due to academic ineligibility and responded with a career-high 26 points in the Cougars' 75-72 overtime win against Nevada. The win was the second straight for the Cougars and improved their mark to 5-0 at Friel Court this season. . . WSU's six victories equal its win total for all of last season.
