Weekly Player Diary
Jan. 4, 2001
Our non-conference schedule is designed to prepare us in the best way possible for games down the road. The schedule was successful in doing that as it made us aware of what we need to work on as a team to compete at the level we want to compete at and it also provided us with various types of play which was beneficial. The team did not achieve our goal for our record (6-4) - but what we achieved through defeat may in fact be more beneficial in helping us really focus and be greatly motivated to compete.
The Utah game was a must win - period. We knew that it had to happen - we needed to pick up our intensity - especially on defense. The win provided momentum for us as a team going in to compete against the Arizona schools. A win gives a team confidence and this was a win that had to and was going to happen.
It is very important to have a strong homestand - at the same time being road warriors is key. Wherever we play we have to come out with the same intensity, focus and poise that helps us win- it is not the fans nor the atmosphere that wins games - it is the players. Not to say that we do not have great appreciation for our fans, our band and our incredible tree - they provide something very special and unique - however, when we go on the road - that can all come with us in spirit and how we feel in front of the home atmosphere can be applied anywhere.
We expect to compete - teams will bring their best and we have to bring ours - every game - the combination of intensity, poise, passion and aggressivenss are key to each and every match up.
It changes the dynamics - that being what Jamie (Carey) and Susan (King) provided for the team physically is not there - but they still provide energy and support. The physical void is something where a true team steps it up - we need to recognize what those aspects were and fill them - each and every person - whether it be the competitiveness in practice - the communication - the leadership - that is the workings of a team sport - if every individual puts in a little extra then it all adds up to what we need.
