Men's Swimming & Diving Cannot Upset Auburn, Florida

AUBURN, Ala. -- The No. 12 men's swimming and diving team of Arizona State was outmatched against the likes of No. 4 Auburn and No. 10 Florida at the James E. Martin center in Auburn, Ala., Saturday.
The Sun Devils competed to a team total of 72 points, well behind Auburn's winning 155 and Florida's runner-up 125. Despite the last place finish, ASU was not without impressive performances.
In the 200 yard freestyle, sophomore Anders Lyrbring and freshman Nick Brunelli finished one-two. Lyrbring swam his fastest time of the season in 1:39.29, pacing Brunelli to his fastest collegiate time of 1:39.70 in the process.
In the 100y free, it was senior Scott VonSchoff racing to a victory. VonSchoff clocked in at 44.86, just ahead of Florida's Carlos Jayme's 44.94. Finishing fourth, fifth and sixth was a trio of Sun Devils made up of Brunelli (45.85), Lyrbring (45.98) and freshman Gavin Meadows (46.19).
Bo West swam a personal best in the 100y backstroke. The junior from Esbjerg, Denmark entered the meet with a best of 51.27, but left with a 51.09 and a second-place finish.
Simon MacDonald, who finished sixth (21.11) behind VonSchoff's fifth (20.95) in the 50y free, raced to a third-place 50.57 in the 100y butterfly. Freshman Ahmed Hussein - in his second competition with the Sun Devils - was next best for ASU with a seventh-place time of 52.44.
Both of the Devils' `A' relay teams raced to runner-up finishes. In the 200y medley relay, Auburn won with a time of 1:30.18, with ASU clocking in at 1:31.63. In the 200y free relay, the Sun Devils' finished the race in 1:22.53, while Florida held on for the win in 1:22.05.
Florida's Ricardo Monasterio and Greg Reeves provided a deadly one-two punch. In the 500y free, Monasterio took first in 4:33.15, with Reeves taking second in 4:37.11. The order was the same for the finish of the 1000y free, where Monasterio dominated in 9:17.28, with Reeves finishing in a distant, yet solid, time of 9:30.30.
ASU's highest finishes in the 500y free came from West and fellow junior Mike Dowling. Dowling came home in 27.20 to earn fourth-place with a time of 4:38.65. West was just behind in sixth, touching the wall in 4:41.20.
After a tough road trip against three ranked opponents, ASU's men will welcome to Tempe the likes of Stanford, California and Northern Arizona over three days of home aquatic action from Jan. 19-21.
