Jan. 10, 2001
STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford University men's team opens up 2001 by traveling to the Sherwood Country Club Invitational this Saturday-Monday in Thousand Oaks. The defending national champion Cardinal will be represented by seven singles entrants and three doubles teams.
Sophomore David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL/Boca Raton Prep), who is ranked 14th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Fall Singles rankings, leads Stanford's seven-player contingent. Joining Martin will be 43rd-ranked Scotty Scott (Belvedere, CA/Pinewood School), 46th-ranked Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS), 83rd-ranked Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS), 86th-ranked Carter Morris (Washington, D.C./St. Alban's HS), Ryan Haviland (Sumter, SC/Sumter HS) and Joseph Kao (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills HS).
On the doubles side, Stanford will send 32nd-ranked Ansari/Scott, as well as ITA Regional Champions Lipsky/Martin and Haviland/Morris.
Last season, the Cardinal swept the singles and doubles titles in Thousand Oaks. Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS) won the title last January as a junior by defeating senior teammate Geoff Abrams 6-3, 6-2 in the singles final, but will not return to defend the crown this year. Abrams and Kim also teamed up to beat Jorge Haro and Brandon Hawk of Texas 9-8 (3) in the doubles final.
The Cardinal opens up dual match play in two weeks when it travels to the Pacific Northwest for Pacific-10 Conference matches at #63 Oregon (Jan. 26, 2:30 p.m.) and #28 Washington (Jan. 27, 2:00 p.m.).
