Jan. 11, 2001
BERKELEY - The Cal women's gymnastics team, coming off one of its most successful years ever, opens the 2001 campaign Saturday night when the Bears travel to Denver to face the University of Washington, the University of Maryland and the University of Denver.
Although still a young team with just one senior, the Bears return the majority of their squad that broke nine school records and placed fifth at the Pac-10 championships - the school's best finish in 10 years.
Senior Pari Olver comes back for her final year after earning a spot as an individual at NCAA regionals last year. The team's co-captain, she was voted Most Valuable Player after her 2000 season.
Sophomore Carrie Kreifels, who joined Olver at NCAA regionals, also serves as co-captain after earning Rookie of the Year honors last year.
Among the new faces to watch are freshmen Stephanie Kim and Karissa Chock, who both qualified for Junior Olympic Nationals last May.
After this weekend's competition, the Bears remain on the road at San Jose State Jan. 19, where they will also face Arizona, Utah State and Oklahoma. Cal's home opener is Sunday, Jan. 21 when Cal hosts Arizona, Utah State and Oklahoma in Haas Pavilion at 2 p.m.
