Beavers Juggle Lineup, Win Twice

Jan. 12, 2001

PORTLAND, Ore. - Despite missing a pair of starters, 15th-ranked Oregon State beat Southern Oregon 43-3 and Portland State 30-6 on Friday in the Oregon Wrestling Classic Duals at Memorial Coliseum. The Beavers (7-3 overall, 3-1 Pacific-10) were without 133-pounder Ben Richards and 184-pounder Isaac Weber, but still took convincing wins over an SOU team ranked fifth nationally in the NAIA and Pacific-10 opponent Portland State.

Richards and Webber are both expected to return to the lineup within the next few weeks. OSU returns home Jan. 20 against a pair of Pacific-10 foes in the Oregon State Duals, meeting Cal Poly at 11:30 a.m. and 11th-ranked Boise State at 1:30 p.m. in Gill Coliseum.

The absences gave OSU an opportunity to use some different people in different spots. One Beaver taking advantage was Nathan Coy, ranked sixth nationally at 174 pounds, he moved up a weight against PSU and took a 3-1 overtime decision against the Vikings' Jeremy Wilson, who has been nationally-ranked this season.

'You just try to come in and win the match, and do whatever you have to to do it,' said Coy, one of several OSU wrestlers to move up a weight for one of their matches Friday. 'It was a good crowd here and a nationals- or Pac-10-type atmosphere.

'It's what you've got to do. This is all preparation for Pac-10s, and you do what you have to for the team to win.'

Oregon State 125-pounder Nathan Navarro, freshman 125-pounder Clint Sieminski and 165-pounder Jed Pennell also moved up for at least one match during the Classic Duals, Sieminski, freshman 184-pounder Ryan Jorgensen and 165-pounder Jake Huffman all moved into the lineup for at least one match.

'You've got to go against a guy who's bigger than you and you've got to deal with some adversity,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said of the lineup shifts. 'And I'm pleased with how we went out and wrestled, especially against Southern Oregon.'

Against Southern Oregon, the Beavers recorded team bonus points in seven of their nine wins, picking up four pins, a technical fall and a pair of major decisions. OSU's margin of victory was its largest over Southern Oregon since a 43-0 win in 1973, a year ago, the Beavers had edged the Raiders just 20-18 in Ashland.

Against Portland State, OSU earned bonus points in four of its eight wins with three technical falls and a major decision.

In beating SOU, Oregon State picked up falls by 141-pounder Shane Cunanan, 149-pounder Casey Horn, 165-pounder Pennell and 174-pounder Coy, plus a technical fall from 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen. From 133 through 174 pounds, OSU earned bonus points in six straight matches.

Four OSU victories were over Southern Oregon wrestlers ranked nationally in the NAIA. Pennell's pin came over seventh-ranked John Sills in 5:39, Coy, ranked sixth nationally in Division I, flattened sixth-ranked Zach Mock in 4:46.

Sieminski started the meet with a 5-2 win over SOU's sixth-ranked Nolan Harris at 125 pounds. To wrap things up, sixth-ranked heavyweight Jason Cooley of OSU beat second-ranked Devin Cole 6-1.

The Beavers' only loss came at 184 pounds, where freshman Ryan Jorgensen was beaten 13-6 by Southern Oregon's Dan Sturgell. Sturgell, the NAIA national runner-up in 2000, went into the match unranked but returned to action just a week ago after recovering from an injury.

In the victory over PSU, the 10th-ranked Navarro earned a 10-4 win over 14th-ranked John Fasana at 125 pounds. The Beavers also got technical falls from Cunanan at 141 pounds, Jorgensen at 157 and Huffman at 165.

Coy has now won 16 of his last 18 matches to improve to 23-5, while Jorgensen has won 11 of his last 15 and is 20-5 with eight technical falls. Navarro has won eight of his last 10 and is now 14-8, while Cooley improved to 15-4.
