Casey At Bat
Jan. 12, 2001
Hello Sun Devil baseball fans!
This is the first installment of 'Casey at Bat' which will be an article written by me throughout the 2001 season.
It's January again and that means baseball season is right around the corner. It's a new year and a new Sun Devil team. Don't worry! There are several familiar faces you will recognize out on the field. The 2001 Devils return several key players from last year's Pac-10 Championship team. Jeff Phelps, Brooks Conrad, Dennis Wyrick and Mike Lopez will once again lead the offensive and defensive groups, while Jon Switzer, Eric Doble and Franco Pezely will bolster the pitching staff. Also returning are outfielders Jonah Martin and Mel Stocker, pitchers Bryce Kartler, Jered Liebeck and Ty Johnson.
The 2001 Devils will have many new faces as well. You will get to know these players very quickly as we expect big things from this young group of talented players.
Currently the Devils are participating in spring practice. The new guys are learning what it takes to be a Sun Devil and how to play the Sun Devil Baseball. While the old guys (like myself) are doing our best to show the rookies the ropes.
We are practicing hard, preparing ourselves for a great season and are confident in our abilities. We hope you come out and support us. We are holding our annual Alumni game on Saturday, Jan.20th, while the season opener is right around the corner Jan. 26th vs. Texas-Arlington. Come out to Packard Stadium and watch some baseball. It is going to be a great season.
'Casey at Bat' will be a weekly, or every other week review of what's happening with ASU baseball. I would also be happy to answer any questions (...well, many of your questions) about ASU baseball, player (on and off the field), or anything else you might want to know about our program. I will also be participating in chats on www.thesundevils.com so look out for those in the coming weeks. Go Sun Devils!
