Gymnasts Fall To No. 3 Michigan In Season Opener

Jan. 12, 2001

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Katrina Severin and Annie Campbell each won an event in the season opener for the No. 12 Oregon State gymnastics team, but their efforts were overshadowed by two key injuries to their teammates in OSU's season opener against No. 3 Michigan at Cliff Keen Arena on Friday night.

Oregon State lost the meet, 194.075-190.925, and it appears the Beavers have also lost one gymnast for the season and another until further testing can be done.

Sophomore All-American Tanya Ricioli was finishing her first tumbling pass on floor when she ruptured her left achilles tendon, while sophomore Elizabeth Jillson injured her right knee on vault. Ricioli is out for the season, while Jillson's status is questionable until further testing can be done on the knee.

Ricioli had started the night off strong with a third-place 9.825 on bars and a 9.70 on vault before the floor exercise. Jillson's vault was the first of her collegiate career, she was limited to bars as a freshman while rehabbing from another knee injury.

'I really don't know what to say. I think the injuries speak for themselves,' said head coach Tanya Chaplin. 'But, they're fighters, and this team is going to regroup and get ready for Nebraska,' where the Beavers will compete against the No. 6 Cornhuskers on Sunday.

The Beavers got the 2001 season off on a high note as Soni Meduna scored a career-high 9.525 on her bar routine to lead off the meet for OSU, and Lara Degenhardt and Ricioli followed with 9.70 and 9.80 routines, respectively. After that, though, the Beavers had back-to-back falls before Stephanie Bychowski turned a team-high 9.825 to finish out the event for OSU, which scored a 48.050 as a team on bars. Bychowski's score earned her a second-place finish behind UM's Karina Senior, who scored a 9.85 on the event.

Michigan opened up with a 48.725 on vault with a new rule that allows just one vault per gymnast. In the past, gymnasts were allowed two vaults, throwing out the lower of the two scores.

OSU had a strong outing on vault in the second rotation, as Katrina Severin won the event with a 9.85 to surpass Michigan's Christine Michaud and Janessa Grieco, who each scored 9.825s on their vault. Degenhardt scored a 9.80 to finish fourth. Freshman Lindsay Nelson scored a 9.525 in her collegiate debut, while Lopez added a 9.55.

After two events, the Wolverines held a 97.375-96.475 advantage, but both teams struggled in the third rotation. Michigan had three gymnasts fall on beam to score a 47.425, while Oregon State had four falls on floor for a 47.050. Annie Campbell scored a team-high 9.85, which ended up tying for third place. Severin turned in a 9.825, but no other OSU gymnasts scored above a 9.225 in a counting routine although Nelson scored a 9.675 in an exhibition routine. Lopez, Degenhardt and Marissa Bruch all fell, and the Beavers had to count all three scores since Ricioli's routine wasn't scored because of the early injury.

Michigan's falls on beam were contagious as OSU had three falls of its own on the event. The Beavers did have a bright spot on beam, with Campbell tying UM's Shannon McKenzie for first-place with a 9.75, while Bychowski added a fourth-place 9.60 and Nelson turned in a 9.575. Severin and freshman Elaine Yoder, who filled in for the injured Ricioli, both fell on their dismounts, while Lopez also added a fall for OSU, which finished the event with a 47.400.

Michigan closed out the meets with a 49.275 on floor, with four scores of 9.85 or better, including a first-place 9.90 from Calli Ryals.
