Ali Ansari Wins Doubles And Consolation Singles Titles At Sherwood Men's Tennis Collegiate Cup

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Stanford seniors Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS) and Scotty Scott (Belvedere, CA/Pinewood HS) captured their first career doubles title by winning the Sherwood Collegiate Cup on Monday afternoon at the Sherwood Country Club. Ansari also won the consolation singles title, while Ryan Haviland (Sumter, SC/Sumter HS) fell in three sets in the main draw singles final.
The 32nd-ranked Ansari and Scott defeated Stanford teammates in both the semifinals and finals to give the top-ranked Cardinal its second straight doubles title in this event in as many years after Geoff Abrams and Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS) captured the crown last season.
Ansari and Scott blanked sophomores Haviland and Carter Morris (Washington, D.C./St. Alban's) 8-0 in the semifinals before facing off with sophomores Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS) and David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL/Boca Raton Prep). Martin and Lipsky advanced to the finals with an 8-2 upset over 25th-ranked Sebastien Graeff and Stefan Suter of Pepperdine. But in the championship match. Ansari and Scott prevailed 8-5 to bring home their first title and hand Lispky and Martin their first loss in 10 matches this season.
In the singles main draw, Haviland stretched 27th-ranked Jean-Julien Rojer of UCLA to three sets before falling 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. The unranked Haviland, who was making his first career appearance in a single final, had beaten three consecutive Bruins to reach the final, including 28th-ranked Jean-Noel Grinda in the second round and 47th-ranked Erfan Djahangiri in the semifinals.
In the consolation singles final, the 83rd-ranked Ansari knocked off Chris Sands of UCLA 9-7.
The top-ranked Cardinal begins dual match play on January 26 when it visits #63 Oregon on January 26, and opens up its home schedule on February 9 against #21 Fresno State at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
