PAC-10 NOTES

ARIZONA - Arizona (No. 20) opened its season on Sunday with a strong win against 19th ranked
North Carolina State, and James Madison. Arizona finished in second place with a score of
193.450, just 0.35 points shy of New Hampshire's winning score of 193.800 ... SR Kara Fry
won the All-Around competition while seven other Wildcat gymnasts set career high marks.
FR Aimee Estella won the individual vault title in her official collegiate debut . . .
Arizona starts its season full steam ahead with eight returning letterwinners, one All-
American (Randi Liljenquist) and 8 new freshman who give the team a huge dose of youth,
energy and enthusiasm.

ARIZONA STATE - The No. 11 Sun Devils pulled off a respectable third place finish at this years'
Maui Invitational. ASU rallied to a final team score of 191.525 against top ranked UCLA
and No. 6 Nebraska...JR transfer Laura Moon had the Sun Devils highest individual finish
with a score of 9.95 on bars... ASU will be ready to face the No. 12 Beavers this Friday
after taking this weekend off from competition...ASU returns one All-American (Kelly
Cowley) and adds four newcomers, including JR transfer MVP Laura Moon.

CALIFORNIA - At Pioneers' Hamilton Gymnasium in Denver, the Golden Bears finished in the top two
in two events as Genine Ishino placed second on beam (9.900) and Janet McKnight vaulted to
a score of 9.825. Carrie Kreifels was the Bears' highest all-around competitor posting a
score of 38.675 to place third. The Bears placed fourth with a score of 191.650 at the
meet which featured No.16 ranked Washington, 13th ranked Denver and 23rd ranked Maryland.

OREGON STATE - The No. 12 Beavers return from their Midwest roadtrip after narrowly losing out
to No. 6 Nebraska on Sunday... The Beavers finished with 194.900 points to the Huskers \
195.225, but overcame adversity and the loss of two key members to injuries (All-American
Tanya Ricioli and bar specialist Elizabeth Jillson) . . . Despite a disappointing loss and
a slew of injuries in Michigan on Friday, the Beavers were led to a strong team performance
by Annie Campbell who won the all-around (39.075) and Lindsay Nelson (38.725) who finished
third.

STANFORD - The No. 7 Cardinal started up their season with an impressive third place finish at
the Super Six Challenge (195.300). All six teams who competed were ranked in the top 10 ...
Stanford looks to continue its rise to national prominence. The Cardinal believe that to
make that mark, it is necessary to compete against top opponents. With a grueling schedule
containing 12 teams ranked in the pre-season top 20, the help of two returning All-
Americans (Katy Herbert and Jennifer Exaltacion) and one Olympian (Lise Leville) the
Cardinal should be well on their way.

UCLA - The No. 1 Bruins continued to show why they are top in the nation by edging out Cal State
Fullerton 196.825-192.9. UCLA's score is the nation's highest score of the season. . . SO
Doni Thompson, who won the All-Around (39.425), and her teammates swept the top three
places on all four events...The Bruins look to defend their national crown with the
addition of three Olympians (Jaime Dantzcsher, Kristen Maloney and Yvonne Tousek).
Dantzscher showed she is ready for action by scoring two perfect 10s, the first UCLA
gymnast to record two 10's in the same meet, at the Jan. 5 Maui Invitational.

WASHINGTON - The No. 16 Huskies finished their first meet of the season placing second at
Denver's four-way meet. The Huskies posted 192.900 to Denver's 194.175... JR Stacy Wong,
back from knee injury finished first on bars (9.925)... SR Lanna Apisukh won the all-around
competition with a score of 39.050... Washington will compete this season without JR
Allison Bruce who tore her Achilles tendon during the preseason... The Huskies add seven
new freshman including Olympian Gharde Geldenhuys to their roster.
