Husky Tennis Downs Pilots 6-1, In Men's Season Opener

SEATTLE, Wash. -- The 28th-ranked Washington Huskies defeated the Portland Pilots 6-1, in the first match for the men in the 2001 season. Washington improved its' series record to 40-0 against Portland.

Washington was victorious in singles play, winning out in each position. Sophomore sensation Matt Hanlin, playing in the No. 1 singles spot defeated Peter Malacek in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-2. Ari Strasberg, who is currently ranked 89th in the latest ITA poll, defeated Quang Nguyen 6-1, 6-0. Two newcomers, junior transfer Andrej Bizjak and freshman Michael Rubin, got their first victories as Huskies in singles play.

In doubles play, the No. 1 duo of Jeremy Berman and Andy Posavac came away with an impressive victory, defeating Matt Baer and Lars Anderson, 8-3. Playing in the No. 2 position, Dillon Ruby and Ari Strasberg were defeated by Jeff Nunnenkamp and Quinn Borchard, 8-4. The final Washington duo of Andrej Bizjak and Matt Hanlin went down 0-2 in the opening sets, but climbed back to keep the match close at 4-5. Despite their efforts, Bizjak and Hanlin were outlasted by Portland duo Peter Malacek and Nick Tostenrude, 8-5.

Washington will face Boise State on Saturday, January 20th, with matches scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
