EUGENE, Ore. -
The Ducks look to build on their successes from last season. Their 12-10 record was not completely indicative of the huge gains Oregon made during the regular season. The Ducks come into the winter season returning only three letterwinners, senior David Becker and sophomores Jason Menke and Oded Teig. But the three were bright spots during Oregon's run to the NCAA Regional tournament. Teig played a tremendous freshman season, notching a 22-13 record. Becker posted a 9-13 record, while Menke finished the season at 6-15. Oregon's first taste of winter competition will come at the Foster Klima Ice Volleys Classic on Friday, January 19th. In the first match, the 63rd-ranked Ducks go up against the 30th-ranked Indiana State Sycamores. Indiana State is led by 50th-ranked senior Jonas Piibor and 79th-ranked junior Stefan Him. Defending champion 18th-ranked Minnesota will take on unranked North Carolina State. The winner of the first two matches will play on Saturday.
COACH CHRIS RUSSELL
The native of Monterey, Calif., begins his sixth season as men's head coach and has positioned the Ducks as one of the Pac-10 Conference's up-and-coming programs. Russell received the Pac-10's Coach of the Year award last season, after coaching the Ducks to a 12-10 record and a birth in the NCAA Regional tournament. Russell ranks third all-time in the program's history in wins (54) and fourth in tenure (5) years. Before arriving at the University of Oregon, Russell coached the men's (1988-89) and then the women's (1991-94) team at UC Santa Barbara for four years. Russell received Coach of the Year honors in the Big West Conference each year as a UCSB coach, and picked up West Region Coach of the Year accolades from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in 1994.
