No. 6 Cal Women Swimming Defeats Arizona State

TEMPE, AZ - Phenomenal Cal freshman Natalie Coughlin won three individual events - more than the total by Arizona State swimmers combined - as No. 6 ranked California defeated No. 17 ASU (no score provided by Arizona State) in women's swimming action Saturday at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe, AZ. With the win, Cal is now 4-2 (1-1 in the Pac-10) in dual meets this season, while ASU drops to 4-5.
In the 200 fly. Coughlin won with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:58.67. Then in the 500 free, Coughlin cruised in at 4:56.45 and finally, in the 100 fly, Coughlin completed her hat trick in 52.88.
Senior Haley Cope was also a multiple winner for the Bears, capturing the 100 (55.86) and the 200 back (2:01.67). Other individual winners for Cal were freshman Natalie Griffith in the 200 free (1:52.34), senior Rita Mariani in the 100 breast (1:05.01), sophomore Michelle Harper in the 50 free (23.57), freshman Danielle Becks in the 100 free (52.04) and freshman Kyoko Yokouchi in the 400 IM (4:22.80).
The Bears also placed first in the 400 medley relay (3:46.61 Coughlin, Mariani, Cope, Becks) and the 200 free relay (swam as exhibition 1:34.42 junior Adrienne Mattos, Harper, Cope, freshman Katherine Mitchell).
