Oregon Falls to No. 1-ranked Stanford, 7-0

Jan. 20, 2001

The University of Oregon women's tennis team lost to No. 1-ranked Stanford today at the Student Tennis Center, 7-0.

The dual began with a Cardinal sweep in doubles, beginning in the number one position, where Oregon's Monika Giexzys and Courtney Nagle went scoreless (8-0) against Stanford's Lauren Barnikow and Laurnen Kalvaria. The Ducks' Davina Meniburu and Janice Nyland pulled in only two points (8-2) against the Cardinal's Laura Granville and Gabriela Lastra, while the remaining Oregon duo, Adeline Arnaud and Jeanette Mattsson, also fought for two points against Stanford's Emila Anderson and Keiko Tokuda, 8-2.

Oregon faced tough competition with four of Stanford's players ranked in the top-25. Cardinal junior Laurne Kalvaria is ranked at eighth, while sophomore defending NCAA singles champion Lauara Granville is No. 22, Keiko Tokuda is No. 21 and Gabriela Lastra is No. 23. The Ducks were held to only five points in the top-two positions.

In number one singles, Stanford's Laura Granville swept Oregon sophomore Jeanette Mattsson, 6-0, 6-0. In the No. two position, the Ducks' Janice Nyland was defeated by the Cardinal's Lauren Kalvaria, 6-3, 6-2, while Oregon teammate Monika Gieczys battled with Stanford's Gabriela Lastra, 7-5, 7-5, in the third position. The Cardinal's Luaren Barnikow defeated Oregon's Adeline Arnaud in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, while Stanford teammates Keiko Tokuda defeated the Ducks' Vickie Gunnarsson, 6-2, 6-2, and Emilia Anderson defeated Davina Mendiburu, 6-4, 6-2.

'There is a good reason why Stanford is the No. 1 team in the country and they showed it today,' said Oregon women's head tennis coach Jack Griffin. 'They have amazing talent from the top of their line-up to the bottom. I was very pleased with our team's effort. They fought incredibly hard and played some very good tennis. We are looking forward to battling No. 5 California tomorrow.'

The Ducks, 0-1, will take on the fifth-ranked California Sunday at the Student Tennis Center at noon.
