Top-Ranked Women's Tennis Sweeps Oregon, 7-0

EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 1 ranked Stanford women's tennis team had no problem in its Pacific-10 Conference opener as it swept Oregon 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center on the University of Oregon campus.
The Cardinal yielded just four points in the three doubles matches and won the six singles matches in straight sets. The doubles team of Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ) and Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL) held Monika Gieczys and Courtney Nagle scoreless en route to an 8-0 win. Barnikow and Kalvaria hold the No. 13 ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.
At No. 2 doubles, Laura Granville (Chicago, IL) and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV), who are ranked No. 30, had an 8-2 win over Davina Mendibru and Janice Nyland. Rounding out the doubles play was an 8-2 win by Emilia Anderson (Cincinnati, OH) and Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ) over Oregon's Adeline Arnaud and Jeannette Mattsson.
In singles play, Granville, the defending NCAA Champion, swept Mattsson 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 2 spot, 13th-ranked Kalvaria defeated Nyland 6-3, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Lastra, who is ranked No. 23, had a 7-5, 7-5 win over Gieczys followed by a 6-2, 6-3 win by Barnikow over Arnaud. Twenty-first-ranked Tokuda was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Vickie Gunnarson while Anderson handed Mendibru a 6-4, 6-2 loss.
The Cardinal continues Pac-10 play at its home Taube Family Tennis Stadium on Friday, Jan. 26 when it hosts Washington State. Stanford then plays host to Washington on Saturday the 27th.
