Oregon Women Fall to No. 5 California, 6-1
Eugene, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's tennis team lost their second match in as many days, falling 6-1 to No. 5 California. Freshman Davina Mendiburu recorded a single victory for the Ducks, defeating Lisa Swierniak in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Oregon, despite its solid play, was unable to record a victory in doubles play. Sophomore Monika Gieczys and freshman Courtney Nagle were defeated in a 9-8 (8-6) tiebreaker match. And Mendiburu and junior Janice Nyland losing a close 9-7 match to California's Christina Fusano and Catherine Lynch.
In singles play, sophomore Jeannette Mattsson and junior Vickie Gunnarsson fought for three sets each before losing, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 and 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, respectively, to California's Raquel Kops-Jones and Sekita Grant.
'We were extremely competitive in our doubles matches,' head coach Jack Griffin said. 'And we lost two three-setters, which, had we won them, could have meant a three-point turnaround. We're not very far off. We're doing some good things.'
California, no stranger to success, made their second consecutive Final Four appearance at last year's NCAA Tennis Championships.
'Cal played smart in the close sets,' Griffin said. 'They don't give away any free points. But I'm encouraged. We fought hard for every point.'
The Ducks will host Boise State on Sat., January 27, at 5:00 p.m. at the Student Tennis Center.
