Women's Track Opens Indoor Season at Eugene Indoor

Jan. 20, 2001

EUGENE - The Duck women opened their indoor track and field season with individual wins in six of 12 events Saturday at the Eugene Indoor at the Lane County Fairgrounds.

Duck winners included junior Endia Abrante in the 50 (6.92), freshman Ann Sullivan in the 60 hurdles (7.69) and long jump (PR 18-5 1/2), senior Maureen Morrison in the weight throw (53-9), sophomore Mary Etter in the shot put (42-8 1/2) and junior Niki Reed, although competing unattached, in the pole vault (12-6).

Among other solid marks, Abrante finished second in the 300 (42.27), sophomore Janette Davis took second in the 600 (1:40.65), senior pole vaulter Holly Speight finished second (11-0), freshman Rachel Kriz and sophomore Jenny Brogdon finished second and third in the high jump (5-4 1/4), sophomore Deb Lee took second in the triple jump, sophomore Jordan McDaniels placed second in the shot put (39-3 3/4), and Etter took second in the weight throw (53-5 3/4).

'We got a good start from several of our top returning athletes - Endia, Mo Morrison, Niki Reed to name a few,' Oregon women's head coach Tom Heinonen said, 'and at least a couple of our newcomers stepped right in at the top - particularly Ann in the hurdles and Rachel in the high jump. Janette ran her first 600 after a hard workout yesterday and ran about as fast as anybody ever has for us at this meet. Endia showed competitiveness and fitness by essentially running three 50s with the recalled race. Mo threw a foot farther than last year, and Mary improved 10 feet from her career opening performance last year. We were hoping for improvement from our returning athletes and a good start from our freshmen.'

The Duck women now look forward to the Great Northwest Open in Portland, Sun., Jan. 28 and the Silver State Invite, Sat., Feb. 3 in Reno, Nev.
