TEMPE, Ariz. - The 2001 Sun Devils unofficially opened the season with an 8-3victory over a very talented and experienced team...ASU Alumni. Withformer players such as Mitch Jones, Andrew Beinbrink, WillieBloomquist, Mikel Moreno, Michael Collins, Richy Leon and DanMcKinley (just to name a few), the ASU Alumni team was deep in talentand full of ASU history.
The Alumni game is a chance to experience the great ASU Baseballtradition. The Alumni, representing the past players that developedand cemented ASU as a college baseball powerhouse, and the currentteam representing the present and future players that carry on theASU baseball legacy. For the Freshman or transfers, it's theirchance to play against the players they watched and admired. For usSeniors, it's our chance to see and play once again with teammatesfrom the past.
After coming out of the game and watching from the sideline, Irealized the next time I played in this game, I would be in the otherdugout. A strange realization. All in all, the Alumni game was agreat success.
This week we are preparing for our official opening againstTexas-Arlington this weekend. Texas-Arlington is a good team, thatreturns several players from last year's squad. Both teams will beready to play, so it will be an enjoyable opening series to watch.
