Mike Gillespie Honored As USA Baseball National Coach Of The Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- USC head coach Mike Gillespie was honored by USA Baseball as their National Coach of the Year at the fifth annual National Coaching Recognition Weekend in New York City, held by the United States Olympic Committee. The gala Awards Dinner on Jan. 13 was the culmination of the three-day event.
Gillespie guided the USA National Team to a 27-3-1 record last summer. The team's winning percentage (.900) was the highest in club history.
Forty-four Olympic and Pan American sports named their National and Developmental Coaches of the Year. All coaches and their guests were part of a weekend tour that included a trip to the top of the World Trade Center, a VIP visit to the New York Stock Exchange, attendance at a Broadway musical and lunch at Tavern on the Green.
The Trojans will open the 2001 season on Saturday (Jan. 27) with the annual Alumni Game at Dedeaux Field at 1 p.m., with the start of the regular season on Wednesday (Jan. 31) against Santa Clara at 3 p.m. USC is the consensus No. 2 team in the nation, according to preseason polls.
