Jan. 24, 2001
The Stanford softball team will open the 2001 season at No. 15 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Preseason Poll. All eight Pac-10 teams are represented in the poll.
UCLA is the preseason favorite, receiving 13 first place votes. Arizona comes in at No. 3 while Washington is ranked fourth. Arizona State checks in at No. 6, followed by No. 7 California. Oregon State is ranked 16th behind the Cardinal and Oregon begins the season ranked 20th.
Stanford ended last season with a 45-18 record and ranked 18th in the final poll. The 45 wins was a single-season school record and earned the Cardinal a number-one seed heading into postseason. Stanford would bow out of the NCAA tournament after a 5-4 loss to host-school Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
The Cardinal will open this season against San Francisco State on Saturday, February 3 at 1 p.m. at the Stanford Softball Complex.
