Men's Golf Opens Spring Season In Arizona

Jan. 26, 2001

BERKELEY - With two Top 5 finishes during the fall, the California men's golf team opens its spring tournament season at the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate, Jan. 29-30. Hosted by the University of Arizona, the two-day, 54-hole tournament is being held at the Raven Golf Club (6,900 yards, par-71) in Tucson, Ariz. An 8 a.m. MST shotgun start will be used each day with 36 holes scheduled for Monday and 18 on Tuesday.

A TOUGH FIELD
In addition to the host school, No. 10 Arizona and Cal, the 20-team PING-Arizona Intercollegiate field features four teams ranked in the top 25 in the most recent Mastercard/CGF college golf rankings and three teams in the top 10. Scheduled to compete: No. 4 South Carolina, No. 8 BYU, No 16 USC, California-Irvine, Long Beach State, Mississippi, Arizona State, Arkansas and New Mexico State. Also competing are: Ohio State, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine, Stanford, Texas-El Paso, UCLA and Washington.

MOST RECENTLY
The team's best result in the fall was at Pacific Invitational, hosted by the University of the Pacific, where the team placed third out of 17 teams. Cal's Jesse Ruda won the tournament with a 9-under-par score of 207 (67-69-71). Cal also tied for fifth at the Husky Invitational, hosted by Washington, and sixth at the Fresno Lexus Classic. Cal finished 3rd in the 1999 Pac-10 standings and advanced to the NCAA West Regionals.

TOP 5 OR BUST
The Bears may not have won a fall tournament, but they played consistently solid rounds throughout the season. Cal finished in the top 5 in two of its fall tournaments. Coach Desimone hopes the team continues to finish in the top 5 because he believes this squad, though young, may be his strongest team in years.
