No. 1 UCLA Gymnasts Upset By No. 25 Arizona State
Jan. 26, 2001
Tempe, AZ - Arizona State's 22-meet, five-year home winning streak remained intact after the 25th-ranked Sun Devils upset top-ranked UCLA, 196.35-196.0.
UCLA held a three-tenths of a point lead heading into the final rotation, but two falls on the balance beam allowed ASU on floor to slip past with the victory. All six ASU gymnasts scored 9.8 or higher on floor. After two of the first three Bruins suffered falls on beam, Alyssa Beckerman and Malia Jones responded with 9.875s, and Kristen Maloney closed with a winning mark of 9.925. But it wasn't enough to displace the home team.
Individually, Jones won the all-around for the first time in her career with a 39.375. Kristin Parker took first place on vault with a 9.9. In her first bars competition of the season, Onnie Willis tied for first with a 9.875. Maloney won beam with a 9.925, and Doni Thompson and Yvonne Tousek tied with three ASU gymnasts for first on floor with 9.875s.
The loss is UCLA's first of the 2001 season. The Bruins will regroup for a Sunday 2 p.m. home meet against Alabama, Cal State Fullerton and Southern Utah at Pauley Pavilion.
