No. 6 Cal Women's Swimming Tops No. 8 USC, 153-143

BERKELEY, CA - The No. 6 ranked California women's swim team (5-2, 2-1 in Pac-10) defeated No. 8 ranked USC (3-2), 153-143, in a dual meet Friday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
The Bears were led by freshman Natalie Coughlin, who won three individual events, capturing the 200 free (1:48.45), the 200 fly (1:57.28 NCAA automatic qualifying time) and 200 IM (2:00.80). In three Pac-10 dual meets this season, Coughlin has won nine races. Senior Haley Cope placed first in the 100 back (55.11) and the 100 fly (56.12). Other individual winners for Cal included sophomore Staciana Stitts in the 200 breast (2:17.62), sophomore Michelle Harper in the 50 free (23.58) and freshman Danielle Becks in the 100 free (50.91).
USC was paced by sophomore Asa Sandlund, who won the 500 (4:55.52) and 1,000 free (10:07.83), and junior diver Kellie Brennan, who placed first in the one (300.45) and three-meter (324.1) diving competition.
Cal will next host No. 2 ranked UCLA, Saturday, Jan. 27 at 12 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
