Oregon Wrestling Falls 21-14 to Fresno State
Jan. 26, 2001
The University of Oregon wrestling team, ranked No. 12 this week, lost its second-straight dual meet Friday, falling 21-14 to Fresno State in California. The Ducks are 7-5 overall, 4-1 Pacific-10 Conference.
Oregon's matchup with the Bulldogs was problematic prior to the start of the first bout. Junior Shaun Williams (125), ranked No. 8 this week, was unable to compete because of a concussion he sustained earlier this week. The Ducks were forced to forfeit at 125, giving Fresno State an early 6-0 lead.
The Bulldogs went on to win six of the nine weight classes to keep the Ducks at bay. Oregon's only bonus points came at 184, where No. 7 Doug Lee defeated Jason Rossotti 18-6.
'We need to compete better every time we step onto the mat,' Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'We have got to figure out a way to not concede points. We just have to get tougher.'
One place Oregon has been tough all season is at heavyweight. Sophomore Eric Webb had his fifth upset of the season by defeating No. 2 Billy Blunt, 3-2. Webb is ranked No. 5 this week and has steadily been climbing in the polls after debuting at No. 17 on Dec. 18.
'The one guy that has been going out there and doing it every single match is Eric Webb,' Kearney said. 'He doesn't let anything get into his head and he gets it done.'
Chael Sonnen (197) defeated Tom Gohde and Luke Larwin (174) beat Jeff Mellor 8-3 in Oregon's other victories.
The Ducks wrestle Cal Poly Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and return home to host Arizona State Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.
