Bruins Rally to Upset ASU, 4-3

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 9 UCLA women's tennis team, with help from Bruin junior Catherine Hawley, erased a 3-1 deficit to come back and beat No. 7 Arizona State, 4-3 Saturday in the Bruins' 2001 season opener at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Hawley, who was down 5-3 in the third and deciding set, rallied to come back and defeat ASU's Karin Palme, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(4) at No. 2 singles, giving UCLA the upset victory.

With the Bruins down 3-1 and ASU just one win away from victory, Bruin sophomore Sara Walker cut the lead to 3-2 after posting a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 victory over ASU's Adria Engel at No. 1 singles. Shortly thereafter Bruin freshman Lauren Fisher, playing in her first-ever dual-match, defeated ASU's Mhairi Brown 7-5, 0-6, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, evening the score at three apiece. Hawley, who was playing her first-ever match at No. 2 singles, then clinched the match for UCLA.

The Bruins return to action tomorrow to take on No. 24 Arizona at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 10:00 a.m.
