Men's Tennis Falls to No. 24 California, 5-2
Jan. 27, 2001
The University of Oregon men's tennis team fell to 24th-ranked California on Saturday, 5-2. The Ducks competed hard earning the doubles point and establishing an early lead in the first sets of singles, but the Bears showed their confidence and poise coming back to sweep all, save one, of the singles points. Oregon sophomore Jason Menke brought in back-to-back wins this weekend by defeating California's Ben Miles in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.
In doubles, the Ducks' senior David Becker and Martin Pawlowski teamed for a win over California's Scott Kintz and Erik Dmytruk, 9-8, while Oregon duo Oded Teig and Chris King defeated the Bears' Ben Miles and Hiro Nakamura, 9-8. The Ducks' Jason Menke andBuck Mink battled the Bears' John Paul Fruttero and Adrian Barnes, ultimately losing the match, 9-7.
For the second day in a row in singles play, Oregon freshman Buck Mink took the match to three sets, losing to California's Ben Miles, 2-6, 7-5, 7-1. In the No. 1 singles match, the Ducks' Oded Teig played a tough match against 7th-ranked John Paul Frutero, losing 6-2, 6-3, while fellow Oregon teammate Martin Pawlowski lost in straight sets to No. 22 freshman Balazs Versess, 6-4, 6-4.
'We played hard,' said Oregon men's head tennis coach Chris Russell. 'Across the board, we didn't play as tough as we did yesturday against Stanford. All in all, I think we played competitively. We're a type of team that will have to earn everything we get. I thought Jason Menke played very focussed from start to finish and the rest of the guys need to learn to focus like that. Buck Mink was in a position to win both days, but he let up. Hopefuly he will gain experience and grow from these experiences.'
Oregon, 0-2 in the Pacific-10, will entertain Boise State Friday, February 2 at 5:00 p.m and Northwestern on Sunday, February 4 at Noon at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene, Oregon.
