Seventh-Ranked Women's Tennis Drops Thriller To #9 UCLA, 4-3

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The seventh-ranked Arizona State (1-1, 0-1) women's tennis squad opened up Pac-10 action today with a tough 4-3 loss that went down to the wire against the #9 UCLA Bruins (1-0, 1-0) at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
In doubles action, ASU earned its team point by winning two of the needed three match-ups. ASU's combos of Adria Engel/Karin Palme and Cindy Sureephong/Megan Yeats defeated UCLA's Sara Walker/Zana Zlebnik and Fritz-Krockow/Donahue, 8-3, on the No. 2 and 3 courts, respectively.
In singles action, ASU held a 3-1 advantage over the Bruins before UCLA sophomore Sara Walker cut the lead to 3-2 with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win over ASU's Engel on the No. 1 court. UCLA junior Catherine Hawley then downed ASU's Karin Palme on the No. 2 court in a thriller that decided the match. Hawley rallied to come back and beat Palme 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(4) to give the Bruins the victory. For the Devils, Megan Yeats improved her record to 10-3 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Zana Zlebnik on the No. 3 court. On the No. 6 court, Cindy Sureephong was the other Sun Devil to come away with a singles win, defeating Mariko Fritz-Krockow, 2-6, 6-0, 6-1.
The Devils will take on the No. 12-ranked Trojans of USC tomorrow in Los Angeles at 12 p.m. (PST), a match that was previously postponed on Friday due to rain.
